1. Utilize a filing system

Any paper you receive should be sorted and organized. Most offices are notorious for the stacks of paper that pile up on cluttered desk ends. It can be a real struggle when you have to find a specific paper among the heap when you have no idea where to begin. In order to maintain a sense or organization and sanity, it becomes necessary to have some sort of filing system to keep your papers in check.

 

2. Purge the desk clutter

It’s time for the boxes of pens, broken tape dispensers, and old coffee cups to go. Rid your desk of all the clutter by trimming down to just the essential items. Most people don’t even realize how distracting the unnecessary items on their desk can really be. Your desk should consist of a monitor, keyboard, phone, a pad of paper and a few pens. 3. Sort your catch-all drawer

It’s that place where you put all of the things that you don’t want to deal with, but aren’t quite ready to throw away. If you don’t want to pitch it, the next best thing is to sort it. By sorting out your catch-all drawer, you’ll be able to see what is necessary to your productivity and what’s been sitting around, collecting dust forever. Use drawer dividers to give everything a place and compartment. Pick a date on your calendar every few weeks to make sure that things don’t start building up again.

 

4. Don’t use email as a to-do list

Digital clutter can be just as stressful and energy-weakening as physical clutter. Most people drown in office emails and too often use their inbox as a to-do list. Try organizing your inbox similar to your paper files with folders or task functions that are built into the software. Instead of flagging every email that needs responding, use Outlook or Entourage commands to set reminders to follow up.

 

5. Avoid eating at your desk

From the minute we get to work, we all look forward the glorious hour in the middle of the day where we get to eat our lunch. It keeps the brain energized and prevents us from getting distracted by deafening stomach growls. However, you should be eating away from your desk. Eating away from your desk provides an opportunity to take a break from work, recharge and come back with more focus for the rest of the day. Changing surroundings is also good for your brain’s creativity. Not only is eating away from your desk good for your mental health, but it also prevents crumbs and food being spilled into your work space.

 

6. Keep your screen clean

Keeping your computer desktop clean may not affect your physical health, but it definitely helps your emotional health. A screen cluttered with icons will trigger stress and make it hard to find what you’re looking for.
